Nintendo Pulls Ahead

Mark the date!

According to VG Charts, the Wii has just exceeded the market share of the released-a-year-earlier Xbox 360. As of today, VG charts reports 10.57 million Wiis in the hands of consumers, compared to 10.51 million 360s.

The DS, of course, has been ahead for a long time, with more than 48 million units sold (two in my house).

VG Charts attempts to track actual worldwide sales to consumers rather than shipments to retailers. This explains why their numbers are a little lower than the manufacturer's announced numbers, and also why Nintendo is doing a bit better than other numbers might suggest. Microsoft and Sony consoles sit in warehouses and store shelves for some time before landing in a living room.

Expecting another Merry Christmas for NTDOY.

Awesome!! I knew that the Wii was the better console, and this just proves it. You guys are lucky that you have one, I'm still hunting for one. And this also proves the Wii is superior: I went to my local Best Buy, and saw 3 or 4 PS3s, and there were NO WIIS! Thanks for posting this!

I got lucky and found one at a local store the other day. What a GREAT interface.

There is another interesting stat on that same website http://www.vgchartz.com/games/rankings.php . This is a testament to your quote, "the problem with video games hasn't been that they aren't realistic enough. The real problem is that they aren't fun enough." http://davidbau.com/archives/2006/10/30/ignoring_moores_law.html Seven of the ten best games run on PRE game cube hardware.
